The Build San Antonio Green® Program has a variety of options for builders wishing to build green, in both new construction and the retrofit of existing homes:

New Construction

Comprehensive Program - The program is aimed at custom builders. Builders select from a variety of options in each of the five areas (Energy, Water, Site, Health & Materials). Each option is worth a number of points and total points determine the level of certification (from 1 to 3).

Certified Level: - The program is an "entry-level" green home. Based on stick-frame construction, the Certified Level is aimed at production builders and developers. It is in a checklist format and incorporate ENERGY STAR® certification as a requirement. These homes are designed to be 7% above code in Energy.

Level 1: High Performance Home - The Level 1 Program is based on traditional stick-frame construction. It is in a checklist format and aimed at production builders and developers. The Level 1 Program includes materials lists for allowed paints, adhesives, carpets and padding and integrates ENERGY STAR® certification as a requirement. Level 1 is designed to be 15% more efficient in energy than current code.

Level 2: Solar-Ready Option - Level 2 is similar to Level 1 in that it is in a checklist format, but with a higher required level of performance. Also aimed at production builders and developers, Level 2 also integrates ENERGY STAR® certification as a requirement and is 30% above current code in energy. Level 2 is also designed to be a "solar-ready" home, meaning the homeowner can add solar photovoltaic panels later if they so desire.

Level 3: Solar Home - Level 3 is designed to be a solar-powered home. Solar energy is required on all Level 3 homes. These homes are expected to be net-zero energy homes, meaning they should produce as much, if not more, energy than they consume. Level 3 is in a checklist format and is aimed at production builders and developers.

Green Retrofit Programetrofit

The Green Retrofit Program is designed to retrofit existing homes in the areas of Energy, Water, Site and Health. The Green Retrofit Program features three levels. Solar potential evaluations are required for Green Retrofit Level 3 projects, and are an option that can be added to Green Retrofit Level 1 or Green Retrofit Level 2 projects.

Green Retrofit Level 1

Designed for the homes' pre-retrofit HERS Index to improve by 30% in energy.

Green Retrofit Level 2

Designed to bring the home up to current code or better by requiring an improvement in the homes' pre-retrofit HERS Index by 50% in energy.

Green Retrofit Level 3

Designed to bring the home up to current code and then increase efficiency to at least 50% above current code. Solar energy systems are required.

Multi-Family Program

The Multi-Family Program is for duplexes, quadplexes, and apartment buildings three stories and under. The Multi-Family Program is for both new construction and the retrofit of existing homes, each featuring three levels:

Multi-Family Level 1

Level 1 Multi-Family projects are 15% more efficient than a similar structure built to code. Retrofit projects at Level 1 are designed to increase the efficiency to 15% above current code.

Multi-Family Level 2

Level 2 Multi-Family projects are 30% more efficient than a similar structure built to code. Retrofit projects at Level 2 are designed to increase the efficiency to 30% above current code

Multi-Family Level 3

Level 3 Multi-Family projects are designed to be solar-powered homes. Solar energy is required, and these homes are at least 50% more efficient than a similar structure built to code. Retrofit projects at Multi-Family Level 3 also require solar energy and result in an improved performance of at least 50% above current code.

Build San Antonio Green is co-administered with the Greater San Antonio Builders Association. The goal of Build San Antonio Green is to create awareness and interest among builders and homeowners in resource-efficient building methods, materials, and technologies.
